MOGO Uganda partners with Boda Boda Leaders to boost motorcycle financing, road safety and rider livelihoods

MOGO Uganda, a leading asset financing company, has expressed strong interest in forging a nationwide partnership with boda boda leaders to support riders through mutually beneficial initiatives. The commitment was sealed during a high-level stakeholder meeting held in Kampala on Friday, 19th June 2026.
The engagement brought together boda boda representatives, police authorities, and MOGO Uganda officials to discuss key areas including motorcycle asset financing, flexible loan repayment structures, road safety awareness campaigns, community engagement, and regional security challenges such as cross-border motorcycle theft.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Donald Muhwezi, Kampala Metropolitan Police Community Liaison Officer, who was the Guest of Honour, commended MOGO Uganda for its investment in Uganda’s boda boda sector, which employs millions of citizens.
“MOGO Uganda is playing a vital role in an industry that is the backbone of urban and rural transportation in Uganda,” SSP Muhwezi stated. He however raised serious concerns about persistent road safety violations among some riders. He noted that a large number of boda boda operators still ride without essential safety gear such as crash helmets and reflective jackets.
Many also lack valid riding permits, third-party insurance, or proper motorcycle registration documents. SSP Muhwezi further criticized the dangerous practice of fitting motorcycles with unauthorized high-intensity floodlights, which blind other road users and have become a major focus of police enforcement.
The police official confirmed that Traffic Police continue to carry out regular nationwide operations, especially in the Kampala Metropolitan Area. Motorcycles found in violation are impounded, and owners must pay fines, prove ownership, and confirm that the motorcycle is not linked to any criminal activity before release.
SSP Muhwezi expressed disappointment at the continued disregard for traffic rules by some riders, including ignoring traffic lights, riding on pedestrian walkways, and dangerous overtaking, behaviours he said put the lives of all road users at risk.
Frank Mawejje, Chairman of the Boda Boda Riders Cooperative Union, welcomed the partnership and praised MOGO Uganda for expanding access to motorcycle financing.
“Motorcycle ownership has transformed the lives of many riders. It has moved them from renting to owning their motorcycles, promoting financial independence and turning boda boda work into sustainable small businesses,” Mawejje said.
Hakah Ayesiza, Head of Customer Experience at MOGO Uganda, thanked boda boda leaders and police for their trust and partnership.
“I want to emphasize that at MOGO, customer experience is at the heart of everything we do – from the first moment a customer considers us, all the way to loan completion. We are committed to treating every customer with respect, transparency, and care throughout their journey with us,” Ayesiza added.
MOGO Uganda, operating under the Eleving Group, provides accessible financing for motorcycles, motor vehicles, tuk-tuks, smartphones, and cash loans secured against vehicle logbooks. The company offers flexible repayment plans designed to increase access to productive assets and support economic empowerment across Uganda.
The partnership is expected to enhance rider livelihoods, promote responsible motorcycle use, and strengthen collaboration between financiers, riders, and law enforcement for a safer and more prosperous boda boda industry.
